Not only does the fleet competing for the David J. Smith trophy change each year, but so do the rules (and the local club that runs the regatta).
This year, under the watch of the Boston Yacht Club, the David J. Smith Trophy will be competed for on Sunday, August 16, 2009.
It’s basically a race that’s run for creative race management. “In other words, rather than go out there and do what you do every weekend, the race committee is challenged to do something different, whether it be starts, trophies, or something innovative.
When David J. Smith presented the Marblehead Racing Association with the trophy that bears his name, he said his charge was "to do something different or more challenging for the race committee." Etchells, International One Designs, Vipers, J24's and Sonars have also raced for the David J. Smith Trophy in recent years.
