TOWN CLASS WORLDS

Friday, August 6th

The Townie Worlds will be held on Friday August 6th starting at approximately 1:30 PM. The start line will be between Marblehead light and Cat (Children's ) Island. The course will be once around Cat Island.

The race will be followed at 5:30 PM by a Hot Dog/Hamburger cookout at the Marblehead Yacht Club. All registered Regatta participants are welcome to the cookout even if they don't participate in the Townie Worlds race. Marblehead Yacht Club does not have a bar so this will be BYOB.

 SAFETY ISSUES

Boat certification, spar bands, sail numbers and all the usual safety equipment will be required.  Please be prepared with anchor and 50 ft. of line, towline, foghorn or whistle, compass, paddle and Coast Guard approved PFD for each sailor on board.  Sailing can be a dangerous sport, with changing whether and sea conditions along with equipment failures and unforeseen incidents among the many potential hazards.  While the race committee will make every attempt to ensure a safe regatta, it is ultimately the responsibility of each individual skipper to decide whether or not to sail, if and when to withdraw from any race or regatta, and to ensure the safety of his boat, crew and himself.  By registering for this regatta, the skipper acknowledges his understanding of  this responsibility.

Launching and moorings:   Moorings will be provided.  Trailer parking will be available. Location TBD. Launching can take place at any time Thursday beginning at 8 AM or Friday morning until 11:00 AM. Launching at low tide is preferable as it minimizes competition for use of the crane. Due to liability constraints, the crane must be operated by a Corinthian member. Launch requests should be done through Jonathan Tilton, CELL # 781-631-8745.

Spectators are welcome, with great viewing at Marblehead Light.

2009 National Town Class Regatta

Spofford Yacht Club - Spofford, NH

Touisset's own Tom and Tory Sadler sailed Kehaar to win the 2009 Town Class Nationals Regatta held in Spofford Lake, N.H.  Sadler's 12 points positioned them to triumph and take home the heavy metal (with finishes of 3-4-6-1-1-3 out of a 6 race regatta).  Second place went to Nahant's own Team Antrim made up of eight time Nationals Champs Rex and Austin Antrim who sailed Albatross to a 14 point record (with finishes of 2-8-3-6-2-1).

Marblehead's own Team Maitland took home the "Bronze" by sailing Jean to a 17 point score (finishing 1-1-4-7-12-4) achieving 3rd place in this hard fought regatta.

Rumor has it that Team Sadler is the first Nationals Champs since Bob Puleston won back-to-back Nationals Regatta Championships in 1964 and 1965.

7. Check-in Before Start: All yachts are required to check in with the Race Committee before the start of the first race of each day.  Yachts electing not to start a second or subsequent race on each day must so notify the Race Committee before leaving the racing area.

8. 10. Starting Sequence:  Races will be started using RRS Rule 26, with the following modifications.  Shortly before the Warning signal, there will be several short horn blasts.

The starting sequence and signals will be as follows:

Time                 Signal               Visual                                       Audible

-5:00 min           Warning            Class Flag raised                       1 horn blast

Times shall be taken from the visual signals.  The failure of an audible signal shall be disregarded.

10.1 The Starting Line will be between a white staff on the committee boat at the starboard end and a white inflatable ball at the port end.

10.2 A white fender will be trailing approximately 6 feet aft of the committee boat.  This is a “keep off mark”, and no competitor shall pass between it and the committee boat.

Recalls:  Individual recalls will be signaled by one short horn blast, the raising of the Individual Recall Flag (X), and the offending boat(s) will be hailed.  General recalls will be signaled by 2 horn blasts and the raising of the General Recall Flag (First Substitute).  After a general recall, the starting sequence will be restarted as soon as practicable.  After the second recall for any race, anyone over the start line early will be scored DSQ for that race.

After pulling out earlier in the week, Team Maitland and Team Tilton headed out of Marblehead with their Townies, #77 Jean & #28 Nolo in tow.  Wabi Sabi crew member Dawn Crowe hitched a ride with Peter Maitland for the trip down to Touisset, RI.  Tip utilized the professional services of Townie Builder Ralph Johnson, of Pert & Lowell Company, to transport his prized Frolic down to Touisset while he finished up his work week at the Carroll Center.  Dave Anderson who had brought Wabi Sabi down earlier in the week for a visit to his folks home in neighboring Barrington, RI met Team Maitland and Team Tilton over at the Touisset Point Community Center for boat launching.  We were all warmly welcomed by many of the Touisset fleet members who were on hand making preparations for the weekend social and racing events.  After a few beers wetted our whistles we were off to step masts and launch boats.  Unlike the rest of the Touisset orginization's facilities, the place where they launch is a little precarious and requires the need of a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get the trailer and boat from the pavement over sand to the water's edge.  Fortunately there were plenty of hands about to make the rigging, stepping and launching process go smoothly.  Once we were launched we were towed out to the designated mooring to make all of the finishing touches in preparation for Friday's "Around the Bay" race.  Peter Maitland puts the extra effort into checking the rigging and making some last minute fine tuning that will pay off in the day's ahead.  Once, the work for the day was over we were all treated with groovin' tunes from Peter Shaw's Magic Ipod, copious amounts of cold adult beverages, and a great "baked" pizza dinner and salad.

Friday, August 8 (A Fun Race Day)
The day started with a Skipper's Meeting along with breakfast.  The premise of the race was a chance to prepare for the Nationals Regatta that would start the following day and get used to the local area by sailing a course of government marks that would bring us around Mt. Hope Bay.  Thunderstorms were forecasted for the afternoon along with light winds.  We all provided input into the course and provisions were made to lengthen the course in case we completed the course early.  The race committee was introduced and after details were discussed we all headed out to our boats to rig and get ready to head out of the Kickamuit River towards the race area off of Touisset Point.  Team Maitland was the first to rig and get under way and made their best attempts to sail out of the narrow channel against the incoming tidal current.  They looked like they were sailing their hearts out but going nowhere.  Fortunately, Cam was out with his boat and began the towing process to get all of the visiting boats out of the narrow harbor and into the start area.  Once all the boats were out the race committee started the countdown sequence but ended up abandoning the start as it became apparent that some of the boats were too far away from the starting line in light winds to make it back and be able to start with the rest of the group.  The next start attempt went off flawlessly with all clear at the start and yours truely off the line with a good start following Touisset sailing legend Peter Shaw out on starboard.  As would be the case for the next 2 days, being in the right part of the bay to capture the spotty and scattered breezes turned out to be the key to staying ahead of the pack.  As we approached the first mark Red Nun #2 off of Spar Island it was Peter Shaw in the lead with Wabi Sabi in a close 2nd.  We almost caught Team Dragonfly as we passed the mark to our port side and headed for Old Bay Rock and then down to Red Nun #2 off of Cedar Point on what would be considered the "Run from Hell".   With the "light breeze" at our back and the hot scortching sun from overhead beating down us we all did our best to focus on getting every tenth of a knot out of our respective boats.  Meanwhile cumulus clouds, started growing into Towering Cumulus and Cumulonimbus in the west and began heading in our general direction.  Peter Shaw and Dragonfly sporting matching pink T Shirts (very fashion conscious!) ended up taking the 1st place for the day with Wabi Sabi close behind in 2nd.  Once crossing the line, boats proceeded to get to their respective moorings to beat the afternoon thunderstorms that were approaching.  After many beers and watching a dazzling thunderstorm from the protection of the Touisset Point Community Center Club House deck we all proceeded over to the beautiful waterfront home of John & Sally Barker.  A wonderful evening of drinks, steaks, and great conversation ensued.  Many thanks to the Barkers for donating their home for the evening's festivities as well as the many Touisset volunteers who made it such a special evening.

Saturday, August 9 (Nationals Regatta Day One Races 1 - 4)
Following another fine breakfast and Skipper's meeting we headed out to the waters off of Touisset Point to the booming music of the National Anthem followed by the Olympic Theme and many subsequent Jimmy Buffet tunes as 15 Townies sailed back and forth in preparation for the first race of the day.  A relatively short line made for a challenging start for an "A" Course race.  Only 5 boats finished this challenging race due to the wind stalling out just as most of the fleet approached the windward mark.  Starting off the Regatta with a DNF motivated a lot of sailors in subsequent races and also drove the race committee to ensure that there were enough races held to get a "throw out"!  Marblehead sailors cleaned up on this race with Team Maitland's Jean taking 1st place, Frolic taking 2nd place and Wabi Sabi taking 3rd place.  The next race showed that Jean's 1st place was no fluke and that the Maitland Mojo was back as they took their 2nd first place, followed by Touisset's Peter Shaw on Dragonfly and Frolic in 3rd.  The 3rd race of the day was Team Frolic's 1st win of the series followed by another 2nd for Dragonfly and Team Antrim's Albatross in 3rd place.  The final race of the day was the most exciting for yours truely as Team Wabi Sabi caught a stunning start (if I don't say so myself) and maintained the lead around the course to bring home the bacon and take our first 1st place at a Nationals.  Touisset's own Tom Sadler sailed a great race taking 2nd place and Frolic took 3rd to close out the day.

After a sail back to the mooring many gathered on the deck of the clubhouse for a few beers to wet some very dry whistles and chat about the days races.  After that many left to get gussied up for the evenings party held at the beautiful waterfront home of the Barkers.  All had a spectacular time as we enjoyed the breathtaking views of Mount Hope Bay from the Barker's deck and were treated to a scrumptious steak meal complete with many tasty treats before and after dinner.  Many thanks to the Barkers for their hospitality!

Sunday, August 10 (Nationals Regatta Day Two Races 5 - 6, Awards Ceremony)

Race 5 was not kind to the Marblehead Fleet with Wabi Sabi getting 10th place (their throwout) and no boat in the top three.  First place went to Peter Shaw's Dragonfly with Team Antrim's Albatross in 2nd and Tom Sadler in 3rd place.  The sixth and final race of the event was a challenging course and a nice fresh breeze.  Team Antrim showed their usual regatta prowess by taking an early lead and maintaining it to finish 1st.  While we couldn't seem to catch Albatross, Team Wabi Sabi battled with Team Sadler who narrowly edged us out by taking 2nd place leaving Wabi Sabi to 3rd place.

After sailing in all out of town boats began de-rigging in preparation for hauling out.  After all boats were out and on their trailers we gathered at the clubhouse where Nationals organizer Joe Venditti delivered a wonderful awards ceremony.  Marblehead's Team Frolic took home the heavy metal by cleaning up the number one spot by being consistently high scorers in each of the races.  2nd place went to Nahant's Team Antrim and 3rd Place went to Touisset's Team Sadler.  Wabi Sabi tied in score with Peter Shaw's Dragonfly but the tie was broken by Team Shaw having a greater number of 2nd place finishes and thus took the 4th place spot.  Congrats to all for a wonderful Nationals regatta and many thanks to the Touisset Fleet for hosting a truely memorable event.  As we all left I sure that all were thinking about next year's Nationals event to be hosted by the Spofford Lake Fleet.

Town Class Nationals

2007 Season Invitation

The Nahant Dory Club will host the National Town Class Association Annual Regatta on August 4th and 5th. The racing will take place in Broad Sound and can be viewed from Tudor Wharf and the Dory Club. In addition to the Town Class Nationals, The Dory Club will host the Walsh Cup team racing on Friday, August 3rd. The fleet from Touissett Point, R.I. won that competition in 2003. Sailors are expected from Nahant, Marblehead, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

Town Class sailboats are 16 1/2' lap strake dories, constructed in either wood or fiberglass and were first built in the early 1930's by Marcus Lowell in Amesbury, Massachusetts and later by his son Pert Lowell in Newbury, Mass.. The boats are still being constructed by Pert Lowell Company, which is now operated by Pert's son in law, Ralph Johnson. Town Class sailboats have been racing since 1936 in Marblehead and since 1939 in Nahant. They are admired for their classic beauty and forgiving sailing ability, while still being an exciting and competitive one design racing class.

The National Town Class Association was formed in 1962, and the Town Class Nationals have been held each year since, with venues in Nahant, Marblehead, Rhode Island, Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, Lake Massapoag in Sharon, Spoffard Lake in New Hampshire, and also in Newburyport, Mass. The first ever Town Class National Regatta was in Nahant in 1962, and was won by Bart Snow of Marblehead in his boat Annie B. 2, which is now owned by Rex Antrim of Nahant.

The Nahant Dory Club has been well represented in the past, with former champions including Rex Antrim, Ed Younie of Dublin, N.H., and Robert "Pete" Dickenson, who are all still racing here, as well as John Cort, Wilson Tibbo, Ed Tarlov, Dan Perepelitza and Herb Bruce, Jr.

Co-chairs for the event are Nick Strange and Wendy Payne, who can be contacted at townieNationals2007@comcast.net
